17.02.2022 - Axpo is continuing to expand its solar energy activities with the development of new plants in Spain, Italy and Poland totalling 4 GW of installed capacity. Solar power plants with 10 GW capacity will be built by 2030. As the largest producer of renewable energy in Switzerland, Axpo is making a substantial contribution to the growth of climate-friendly power production in Switzerland and Europe.
Expanding Axpo’s solar power capacity by approximately 10 gigawatts will see some 10,000 hectares of solar surface developed on vehicle parking spaces and structures, large roofs, greenhouses, and facilities already in use as sites for solar power. Planned projects across Europe will include the construction of solar plants in the Spanish, Italian and Polish markets, where Axpo has been offering tailored energy solutions to customers for many years. Solar projects with a total installed capacity of 4 GW are already under development in the three countries, creating around 100 jobs in the next 18 months. In France, through its subsidiary Urbasolar, Axpo is also one of the leading companies in the development and construction of solar plants. The company is also researching the feasibility of similar projects for other countries in which it is active.
Axpo’s Head of Renewables, Christoph Sutter, explained: "To counteract climate change, we have to massively increase the expansion of renewable energies. Axpo is making a substantial contribution here. The Axpo Group's substantial know-how in this area covers the entire solar value chain – from plant planning and construction to the marketing of solar power. This enables us to continue growing in important markets such as Spain, Italy and Poland."
Investments will also continue to be made in Switzerland, as the expansion of solar power has a major role to play in the country’s energy transition. Axpo has taken a leading role in projects such as AlpinSolar, an Axpo pioneer project at the Muttsee dam. Through its subsidiary CKW, Axpo continues to drive the expansion of solar plants on Swiss rooftops and larger buildings.
In addition to its involvement in building plants and producing power, Axpo is also a leading pan-European marketer of renewable energies. In total, the company markets about 19,700 MW of solar and wind energy for its customers. Facilitating growth in renewable energies through its expertise in long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), Axpo is also helping its corporate customers to lower their CO2 emissions in some 40 markets.
