How is electricity generated?

Electricity is generated in a variety of ways. Whether hydropower or nuclear energy, wind or solar energy, each form of production has its strengths and weaknesses. Do you know them?

1. Which forms of production are primarily used in Switzerland to guarantee the basic demand for electricity, i.e. to provide band energy?

A) Electricity from hydropower and nuclear energy

B) Electricity from hydropower and wind energy

C) Electricity from hydropower and solar energy

D) Electricity from hydropower and gas-fired combined cycle

2. Is this statement true: Nuclear energy produces CO2-free electricity?

A) No, nuclear energy also generates CO2 during operation.

B) Yes, nuclear energy is CO2-free during operation.

3. Which of the following statements about photovoltaics is wrong?

A) Photovoltaics converts the sun's energy into electricity

B) Photovoltaic is CO2-free in operation

C) Solar energy is a stochastic energy source

D) Photovoltaics can also be increasingly used as band energy

4. Hydropower is Switzerland's blue gold. As Switzerland's largest producer of renewable energies, Axpo knows that its advantages are impressive and numerous. Which of the following statements is not true?

A) Hydropower supplies virtually CO2-free electricity

B) Hydropower supplies band and peak electricity

C) Hydropower has a great potential for expansion

D) Hydropower has a high efficiency

5. How high is the share of hydropower in the Swiss electricity mix?

A) ...around 25 %

B) ...around 30 %

C) ...around 60 %

D) ...around 75 %

6. Geothermal energy uses the energy of the earth's heat It supplies band energy, is renewable and in operation CO2 free. However, it is missing in the Swiss electricity mix. Why?

A) The interior of the earth in Switzerland is not warm enough

B) The technology has not yet been sufficiently tested in practice

C) A geothermal power plant needs too much space

7. Which of the following statements on pumped storage power are correct?

A) Its importance decreases with the expansion of wind and solar energy

B) They balance supply and demand in the electricity system

C) More electricity is needed to pump up the water than is generated by the turbine

D) Thanks to pumped storage power plants, electricity can be stored almost like in a battery

8. Renewable energies include...

A) Solar and wind power, geothermal energy, hydropower and biogas

B) Solar and wind power, gas-fired combined cycle power, nuclear power and hydropower

C) Solar, wind, nuclear, hydro and biogas power

D) Solar, wind, coal, hydro and biogas power

9. How much CO2 is emitted in Switzerland per year?

A) 48 million tonnes

B) 62 million tonnes

C) 48 billion tonnes

D) 62 billion tonnes

1A – 2B – 3D – 4C – 5C - 6B – 7B/C/D – 8A – 9A
