Axpo Deutschland and Siltronic sign fixed-price PPA

23.05.2023 - Axpo Deutschland and leading silicon wafer manufacturer Siltronic have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), Axpo announced today. The PPA will see Axpo provide solar power to Siltronic’s operations at Burghausen in Bavaria and Freiberg in Saxony at a fixed price and based on a fixed schedule, which will enable a predictable and reliable power supply.

Under the 10-year agreement, Axpo will procure 60 GWh of renewable energy annually from photovoltaic (PV) plants in Germany and deliver it to Siltronic’s two production facilities. This corresponds to the annual consumption of more than 20,000 households in Germany and is the equivalent of saving more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. Delivery will begin in 2024.

Axpo Deutschland’s Managing Director, Johannes Pretel, said: “We are pleased to partner with Siltronic in this deal, which allows them to achieve their sustainability ambitions and at the same time supports the construction of additional German PV capacity. Thanks to our decade-long expertise in the PPA field, we are comfortable converting the PV production into a fixed profile. This enables Siltronic to know today already how many megawatt hours their facilities will receive every single hour over the next ten years.”

Axpo Senior Originator Janosch Abegg added: “Many more corporate PPAs are needed to accelerate the energy transition and enable a more sustainable future. Therefore, it is important to make PPAs for companies easy to conclude, implement and integrate into their supply mix. It is great to have Siltronic as our partner and jointly develop a structure that caters to their exact requirements, eliminating complexity and unpredictability.”

Axpo Deutschland concluded the very first PPA in the German solar market back in 2019. Since then, the company has facilitated several bespoke PPAs with companies in Germany, including Obton A/S and ENERPARC.

Based in Leipzig and Düsseldorf, Axpo’s German subsidiary is among the leading marketers of wind and solar energy in the country, drawing on its long-standing experience in onshore and offshore wind farms. In addition to its PPA business, Axpo Germany's core expertise includes power and natural gas procurement and structuring for industrial companies, power plant operators and distributors. Axpo Deutschland recently marked its 20th anniversary.
