30.09.2020 - With the aim of continuing to ensure a reliable supply of energy in the Stäfa region, Axpo is currently laying an overhead line of around one kilometer in length underground. EKZ built a new, more powerful substation that connects Axpo's high-voltage grid with EKZ's medium-voltage grid. The EKZ-operated substation was commissioned at the end of May 2019.
In the communities around Stäfa, the demand for electrical energy has been consistently high for years. Axpo and EKZ have therefore taken comprehensive measures to ensure that the region continues to have a reliable supply of electricity. Within two years, EKZ constructed, tested and commissioned the new Stäfa substation. The new substation is much smaller and much more powerful than the old, 45-year-old facility. The high-voltage switchgear is housed within the building and is therefore much less susceptible to faults than the old outdoor switchgear. The old switchgear was dismantled and the area that was freed up was renaturalized with ponds, hedges and marshland. The costs for the renovation of the Stäfa substation amount to around eight million Swiss francs. The Stäfa substation will be connected to the Axpo high-voltage grid via two 110 kilovolt lines from Herrliberg and Aathal.
Line construction work is still in progress and will be completed in autumn. Axpo is installing the 110-kilovolt line over a distance of around one kilometer between the Brunnenwisli area and the cable already underground outside the Stäfa substation. Since the overhead line runs along a wooded area on this section, there is an increased risk of failure in the event of severe storms due to broken or uprooted trees. Axpo has therefore decided, in consultation with EKZ, to lay the line in the ground on this section.
