Axpo offtakes 1.5 TWh of green energy annually from RWE in Poland

29.08.2024 - In one of the largest renewable energy offtake deals in Poland, Axpo bought all the electricity generated by RWE in the country. RWE’s wind farms and solar plants across Poland have a combined installed capacity of 628MW and produce approximately 1500 GWh of electricity annually.

A route-to-market power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed between Swiss energy group subsidiary Axpo Polska and RWE Renewables Poland, which is part of global renewables player RWE. The PPA covers the offtake of electricity from RWE’s renewables fleet in Poland with a current total installed capacity of 628 megawatts (MW).

Axpo Polska Head of Origination and Board Member Mateusz Marczewski said: “This agreement with RWE is one of the largest solar and wind energy offtake agreements to be signed in recent times in Poland. We are delighted to be working with such a knowledgeable and professional partner. Axpo and RWE each have more than 100 years of experience in the energy sector. We also share similar values and are totally committed to the energy transition.”

Axpo has been active in the Polish market for more than 20 years. In that time, it has become one of the country’s largest independent offtakers of green energy and specialises in the sale to end users of electricity produced from renewable sources. The agreement with RWE further strengthens this position.

Robert Macias, Member of the Board RWE Renewables Poland said: “RWE is among the largest producers of green electricity in Poland thanks to our growing portfolio of renewable assets. With Axpo on our side the green electricity produced by our wind and solar fleet will be efficiently marketed – a win-win for the Polish energy transition.”

With its investment and growth strategy, RWE is contributing significantly to the success of the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the energy system. Between 2024 and 2030, RWE will invest 55 billion euros worldwide in offshore and onshore wind, solar energy, batteries, flexible generation and hydrogen projects. By the end of the decade, the company’s green portfolio will grow to more than 65 gigawatts of generation capacity, which will be perfectly complemented by global energy trading. RWE is decarbonising its business in line with the 1.5-degree reduction pathway and will phase out coal by 2030.
