Axpo will collect the horse manure accumulated at the Longines CSIO St. Gallen jumping tournament. The manure will be used to generate renewable energy and nutrient-rich natural fertiliser at the nearest Axpo fermentation facility.

Here we go again on 3 June 2021: The popular Longines CSIO St. Gallen jumping tournament will start, although with a somewhat different format. Unfortunately, only a very limited number of spectators will be allowed on site this year. All the competitions will be broadcast via live-stream on the Longines CSIO St. Gallen website. The Grand Prix on Friday, show jumping on Saturday, and the Nations Cup on Sunday will be broadcast live on SRF. This is a way to make it possible for all those interested to follow the event this year.

During the 4-day event, all the horse manure will be collected and transported to the plant in Niederuzwil for fermentation. Biogas is produced in the process, and can be directly fed into the gas network after an additional processing step. In addition to energy, nutrient-rich fertiliser is also produced. The fertiliser can be used in gardens or in agriculture and through its usage the natural cycle is completed.

So this "waste" is pretty valuable.

About 130 tonnes of manure will accumulate at the CSIO. This generates a biogas energy volume of approximately 42,000 kWh. That's enough energy to drive some 62,000 km with a gas-driven passenger car (CNG vehicle).

Other ways to use the natural fertiliser

The natural fertiliser generated in the fermentation plant is used for the production of "Naturbett® horse bedding". Axpo Biomasse AG's new product offers many convincing benefits for owners and their horses. After being launched to the market in the fall of 2020, the bedding is now being used in numerous stables. This year, the riders at the Longines CSIO St. Gallen tournament will have the opportunity to try out the Naturbett® horse bedding in their stalls and convince themselves of the quality of this innovative new product. That’s an optimal way to top off the partnership with the Longines CSIO St. Gallen jumping tournament.
