Switzerland’s first digital hydropower plant

Repairs, inspections and maintenance on the Kraftwerke Sarganserland power plants now takes place by digital rather than analogical means. The first digital hydropower plant in Switzerland follows a 360-degree approach and has fully integrated digital processes. A transformation with future potential.

Over the past two years, Axpo has launched various initiatives to digitalise power plant processes. It was possible to bundle all these activities in the Hydro 4.0 project. The kick-off for the realisation of the first digital hydropower plant in Switzerland took place at the Kraftwerke Sarganserland (KSL) location at the beginning of April 2019.

You can have a look at the Kraftwerke Sarganserland pilot plant here:

In the past months, the KSL team and the project team tested and implemented 20 different use cases throughout the plant under real conditions. The digital hydropower plant is unique in Switzerland and one of the few in Europe.

With this know-how Axpo intends to transform all the hydro facilities in its power plant park and will support other hydropower plant operators as a service provider on the way to the digital future.
