Axpo to develop 25 MW wind farm in Finland

11.10.2023 - Axpo will build a four-turbine wind farm in Finland with an installed capacity of 25 MW, it was announced today. This latest expansion of the company’s wind power activities in Europe is consistent with Axpo’s continuing strategic investment in the development of renewable energy.

Axpo, Switzerland’s largest energy group, acquired the rights to construct the Lålax wind farm in Western Finland from Rosafors Invest AB. Located in the municipality of Vörå, in the Ostrobothnia region, the facility’s four wind turbines will have with a total capacity of 25 MW. With all necessary approvals received, the wind farm is now ready for construction.

As the new owner, Axpo plans to commence construction work in spring 2024, with commissioning planned for early 2026. The wind farm will produce around 70,000,000 kilowatt hours of renewable electricity a year, which corresponds to the electricity needs of around 17,500 four-person households. The expansion of renewable energies in Switzerland and internationally is an important pillar of Axpo's corporate strategy.

Axpo plans future wind power developments in Finland

Head of Axpo's Wind Division, Katja Stommel, said the company plans to both acquire development projects and initiate greenfield development activities in Finland. "This project marks an important milestone in the growth of our activities in Finland, where the government plans to be climate neutral by 2035,” she said. “To achieve this goal, the development of onshore wind power plants must be accelerated. We are pleased that Axpo will contribute to this goal with the construction of the Lålax wind farm."

Through its subsidiary Volkswind, Axpo has developed more than 80 wind farms in Germany and France with a total installed capacity of over 1,470 MW. In France, Axpo is one of the leading companies in the development and construction of wind farms, while in its Swiss home market Axpo has wind energy experience through its subsidiary CKW. At the Lutersarni wind farm in Entlebuch, for example, turbines have been reliably generating electricity for a decade. Axpo aims to realise further wind farm projects in Switzerland leveraging the combined expertise of its dedicated wind team and subsidiaries CKW and Volkswind.
