Guarantees of Origins (GoOs) are the only defined instrument to claim the consumption of renewable energy. Without GoO it is impossible to trace electricity back to the source of generation. GoO certificates were implemented by the European Union (EU) in 2001 to create transparency and to support the decarbonization of power markets.

One GoO equals one megawatt hour of green electricity, containing information about production date, location, technology, commissioning date, and installed capacity of the power plant. This enables you to trace the production of renewable energy.

Elcertificates are a support system for electricity producers of renewable energy in Sweden and Norway. The Elcertificate system is market-based and aims to increase the production of electricity from renewable energy sources.

Since 2012, Sweden and Norway have had a joint Elcertificate market that is based on the Swedish Elcertificate market which has existed since 2003. In 2020, the Swedish Parliament decided to introduce a stop rule, which means that the Elcertificate system will end in 2035 instead of 2045. Additionally, new facilities that started operations after 2021 will not be approved for Elcertificates.
