This year marks a significant milestone for Axpo Italia as we celebrate 25 years in the Italian energy market. Since its foundation at the turn of the millennium, Axpo Italia has evolved from a small energy trading company into one of the country’s leading market participants, supporting businesses, households, and institutions with innovative and sustainable energy solutions. In that time, Axpo has consistently invested in technology, people, and expertise, helping to shape and transform Italy’s energy landscape. Here we report on our anniversary celebration in Rome, highlight key findings from a recent study of Axpo Italia, provide an overview of the company's history, and take a look at our upcoming projects.

Today, Axpo Italia is recognised as a key contributor to the country’s energy transition, leveraging our experience in renewable energy, power purchase agreements, and cutting-edge digital solutions. Our journey of continuous growth and commitment to sustainability has positioned Axpo as a trusted partner in the Italian market, providing reliable energy solutions while fostering a greener future.

Milestone celebration

To celebrate this important anniversary, Axpo Italia hosted a special event on 8 April 2025, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) in Rome. Reinforcing Axpo’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, this high-level gathering brought together industry leaders, institutional representatives and business partners to discuss the future of energy in Italy and Europe.

During the event, institutions, partner companies and Axpo representatives shared their visions of the energy future, emphasising the sector’s central role as a driver of the country’s socio-economic development and an essential factor in industrial competitiveness.

Research reveals Axpo Italia impact

To understand the overall impact of its 25-year presence in Italy, Axpo Italia asked the prestigious Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa – one of the country’s leading universities – to analyse the company’s economic and social contributions during that time. The result is an in-depth study of how Axpo Italia supports government and industry energy initiatives, and its role as an experienced and reliable partner contributing to the nation’s energy security.

Axpo’s strategic role in the Italian economy can be seen in the following statistics:

  • 34th largest company in Italy (by revenue)
  • 2nd largest company in Liguria (by revenue)

Electricity market:

  • 5th largest participant in Italian market
  • 4th largest in high and extra-high voltage sector
  • 3th largest in medium voltage sector

Gas market:

  • 10th largest importer of natural gas
  • 10th largest participant in retail market
  • 8th largest seller

Axpo Italy has gained significant market share over the past 25 years and contributed billions of euros to the country's economy, representing a grand total of:

€8,760,079,057

Today, Axpo Italy accounts for 0.43% of Italy’s total gross domestic product (GDP).

25 years of growth, inclusion, and empowerment

During the past quarter-century, Axpo Italia has not only grown as a key player in the energy sector but has also cultivated a corporate culture rooted in responsibility, inclusion, and continuous development. This commitment has translated into concrete actions that define the company’s identity and workplace environment. Axpo Italia has strengthened its support for work-life balance by doubling paternity leave—offering new fathers paid time off well beyond legal requirements—alongside additional paid leave for prenatal and neonatal medical visits, as well as for caregivers.

Diversity and inclusion have been at the heart of Axpo Italia’s evolution, leading to the achievement of gender equality UNI/PdR 125:2022 certification and a workforce with a 50/50 gender balance. Partnerships with organisations such as Valore D and La Luna del Grano have supported the development of structured training programmes on inclusive language, overcoming gender biases, and balancing professional and personal life. These initiatives are part of a broader investment in talent and education, which has seen the company deliver 6,849 hours of training (up 26 per cent year-on-year), with an average of more than 25 hours per employee, ensuring the continuous growth of technical, cross-functional and leadership skills among employees.

As Axpo Italia celebrates 25 years of innovation and progress, these initiatives testify to the company’s unwavering belief that true sustainability is built not only on energy transition but the empowerment and well-being of the people who drive it forward.

Looking ahead

Axpo Italia’s celebrations also offer an ideal opportunity to reaffirm the company’s dedication to shaping the energy landscape of the future. With a strong focus on renewable energy, digitalisation and sustainability, Axpo remains committed to driving the transition towards a more resilient and decarbonised energy system. While celebrating past achievements, Axpo Italia is also looking to the future and will continue to provide innovative, reliable and sustainable energy solutions for the Italian market.

Axpo Italia CEO Simone Demarchi said, "Our achievements are the result of the remarkable journey we have undertaken over the past 25 years. Axpo has secured a strong position in the Italian market by proving ourselves a reliable, innovative and socially responsible energy provider, seamlessly integrating business, sustainability and social responsibility. This reputation is an invaluable asset which we will continue to nurture as Axpo looks ahead with confidence to our next twenty-five years in Italy.”

As part of the Axpo Group, Axpo Italia is at the forefront of applying new technologies in energy supply—such as biogas, hydrogen, and storage—which will play a key role in Italy’s economy over the coming decades.
