Green e-Fuels are synthetic fuels derived from hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, using renewable electricity. Combined with biogenic CO₂ it is possible to produce synthetic hydrocarbons with low CO2 emission factor.
E-Fuels can in some cases be used by existing infrastructure with few modifications, and are especially relevant for hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping or aviation where direct electrification is not viable.
Currently e-fuels are more expensive than fossil fuels, but new regulations incentivise the usage of e-fuels. Such as the inclusion of the maritime sector into the EU ETS system and the Fuel EU Maritime.
Axpo is well positioned to help customers make the transition to green e-fuels. One of the most important cost drivers for these fuels is the cost of electricity. Axpo has many years experience offering solutions for power intensive industries, and we can offer long term PPAs and tolling agreements to e-fuel producers. Over the past 20 years we have worked closely with producers and consumers to optimise PPA agreements and manage long term electricity risk.
Our power and fuels teams work closely, and together can create tailor made solutions to help customers make the step into e-fuels. We are more than happy to hear from you about your projects and find out how we can work together.
