Strategy Swiss made, secure and sustainable
Our owners, the cantons of north-eastern Switzerland, founded Axpo (known as Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke NOK up to 2001) as a producer and network operator in order to foster economic growth and the prosperity of the community. Today, we are active in over 30 countries and 40 markets. Axpo is Switzerland’s biggest contributor of climate neutral security of supply and the largest producer of renewable energy, as well as an international leader in energy trading and the marketing of solar and wind power.
We pursue a clear growth strategy. Internationally, the company focuses on the development of renewable energy sources and its large customer and trading business. Within Switzerland, Axpo is building on its leading role in the transition to a carbon-free energy future. In addition to hydropower, wind and solar energy, we also invest in battery storage systems and hydrogen.
Business model
The Axpo Group produces energy and sells it on the market. It operates on the free market and mainly supplies large customers. The Axpo Group has only a limited number of tied end customers and only in its home market of Switzerland, namely through its subsidiary CKW. The contribution of Swiss end customers to Axpo's result is therefore marginal. CKW is one of the least expensive suppliers in Switzerland.
We generate the greatest added value in the international customer and trading business. We are particularly successful in the area of long-term electricity contracts, for example for industrial companies or for developers of renewable energy plants. We have decades of experience in this area and are very close to our customers. The success of recent years shows that Axpo has been able to position itself strongly in this business because it offers its customers an attractive proposition.
