Safety case KKB 1: Axpo must submit additional information

16.06.2017 - In mid-November 2016, Axpo submitted the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) safety case for Unit 1 of the Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) to the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI. Subsequently, Axpo expected the plant to go back on grid in the spring of 2017. Owing to review comments from the supervisory authority, the restart date has been postponed until the fall of 2017.

The postponement relates to ENSI comments regarding supplementary reports and material tests. Axpo currently continues to expect the new planning and target date for the restart of Unit 1 to be 31 October 2017. The external resource situation also has an impact on the duration of the delay. During the summer months, the availability of experts and specialised companies is very limited.

Axpo remains convinced that no safety-technical reservations exist for the continued operation of the plant. Axpo also expects that the supervisory authority will confirm this.
