26.06.2018 - Unit 2 of the Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) was taken off grid today, Tuesday, as scheduled in order to replace fuel elements. After refuelling, the plant will be ready for the next operating period.
The shutdown of Unit 2 ends the production cycle that began on 28 September 2017. During the cycle, KKB 2 produced some 2.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity reliably and without interruption. This corresponds to the annual power consumption of about 500,000 households in Switzerland.
The shutdown will last for about two weeks during which 20 of the 121 fuel elements will be replaced and installed in the reactor. In addition, recurring inspection work and integral system tests will be performed, and scheduled work on individual plant components will be carried out.
At times steam will be emitted into the atmosphere from the non-nuclear section of the plant during shutdown. This does not pose any danger to human beings or the environment.
