Axpo gathers wind and wildlife data for Swiss project

02.09.2024 - Axpo will undertake preliminary assessment for a potential wind farm of up to six turbines at Flumserberg in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, it was announced today. A wind measurement mast will be installed in September to collect data over a 12-month period. Bat activity will also be monitored. The information gathered will be crucial in planning the project.

During week commencing 9th September 2024, a wind measurement mast 120 metres high will be erected at Flumserberg. The mast will gather comprehensive data on wind speed and direction at various altitudes. Additionally, bat activity will be monitored to assess the potential impact of the wind farm on local wildlife and help develop appropriate conservation measures.

Data key to assessing project viability

Data collected over 12 months will be key to evaluating the feasibility and economic viability of the project. Axpo plans to develop a wind farm of up to six turbines, which could generate enough electricity to supply more than 10,000 households. In addition to contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions by harnessing a sustainable and renewable energy source, the wind farm would also provide economic benefits to the region.

Collaboration with local landowners

The local Flums-Dorf community and the Mols Alpine Corporation have both approved erection of the wind measurement mast, which will be sited at Grappenchöpf, a location with promising wind potential. Data collected will inform the project’s development and detailed planning of the wind farm’s installation.
