Progress in digitizing our hydropower plants: A look at the communication infrastructure

The hydropower industry, like many others, faces the challenge of modernizing its infrastructure for digital operations. As discussed in previous news, equipping hydropower plants with reliable communication infrastructure is crucial. This requires both mobile and operational radio coverage indoors and outdoors. This process demands careful coordination of all activities, and the Axpo Hydro Digital team is at the forefront of these efforts by orchestrating the adaptation of the communication infrastructure. Among the partners playing a crucial role is Axpo Systems, whose expertise and technological solutions make a significant contribution.

To manage the complex process of adapting communication infrastructure in hydropower plants, Axpo Hydro Digital has developed a standardized approach. This includes several steps such as budgeting, inventory, implementation planning in collaboration with the hydropower operator, obtaining quotes from partners like Axpo Systems, project planning, procurement of materials, installation, and finally, acceptance, documentation, and closure.

Currently, Axpo Hydro Digital reports complete infrastructure upgrades in six power plants, including Rüchlig, Wildegg-Brugg, Windisch, Reichenau, Tschar, and Russein. Installation is underway in the Linth-Limmern, Eglisau, and Vorderrhein plants, while installation will begin in the next few months in four other plants, and inventory is scheduled for the coming months in eight plants.

Collaboration with partners like Axpo Systems is crucial for the success of these efforts. Axpo Systems not only provides system technology but also delivers expansion and installation services.
