Axpo spins off ‘emost’ battery solution

07.11.2022 - Following four years of technology development, Axpo is selling its battery storage solution emost (‘electric mobile storage’). Winner of the prestigious IDEE SUISSE prize for innovation, emost delivers flexible and environmentally friendly power supply on construction sites, at events, in emergencies or as a replacement for diesel generators. The Axpo spin-off has been transferred to a new group of investors, led by former Axpo employees, for the commercialisation phase at the end of October 2022.

An innovative battery storage solution, emost can replace diesel generators to provide a flexible, climate-friendly power supply on building sites or at events. Weak electricity grids can also be boosted to facilitate larger energy consumers. Further advantages include its mobility, quiet operation and attractive price-performance ratio compared to generators and temporary grids. In spring 2021, emost was awarded the IDEE SUISSE prize for innovation.

As Axpo focuses even more strongly on its core business, the company has decided to transfer the successfully developed and innovative technology to new owners for commercial scaling. Axpo’s future activities in the energy storage sector will concentrate on large-scale battery plants combined with solar and wind farms.

Buyers and management of emost

Suitable buyers were sought in a competitive process, with a consortium of emost's existing management and successful Swiss entrepreneurs winning the bid. In addition to an attractive financial offer, this also guarantees continuity in management and the transfer of know-how. All relevant assets, rights and contracts have been transferred to the newly founded emost AG at the end of October 2022. The parties have agreed not to disclose the sale price.

The founders of emost AG consist of the entire management team responsible for developing the technology, with Benedikt Domke as its first CEO. The long-serving head of Axpo's Renewables Division, Christoph Sutter, has decided to leave Axpo and, as Chairman of the Board of Directors and co-owner, will lead the commercialisation and rapid international expansion of the now market-ready technology.
