Innovation This is how we see it at Axpo

The key lies in taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digital transformation, both innovatively and strategically. This is the only way to manage all our business areas more efficiently and develop equally profitable others.

The future is our present

At Axpo, digitalisation is crucial in our group strategy and innovation process. We collaborate with partners like ETH Zurich, regularly organise hackathons, and are highly active in machine learning, robotics, blockchain, and the Internet of Things. We also use drones and sensors for various purposes, including cost optimisation.

Some of our most innovative projects

Drones at work

At Axpo, drones monitor the maintenance of the electricity grid. Thanks to them, we can efficiently inspect around 7,500 towers and approximately 2,100 kilometres of high-voltage power lines. Ensuring that both elements are in perfect condition is essential for safe and reliable electricity transport.

Digitalisation

As Switzerland's largest producer of hydroelectric power, we understand that digitalising facilities is a fundamental step in developing this technology. Since 2019, through our Axpo Hydro Digital (HTD) service, we’ve successfully driven the digitalisation of our hydroelectric plants, some of which are over a century old, making them even more efficient in operation and maintenance.

Switzerland’s largest alpine solar plant

We've partnered with IWB to build Switzerland's largest alpine solar plant. Located on the Muttsee Dam in the canton of Glarus, at an altitude of 2,500 metres, it has been fully operational since mid-2022. The AlpinSolar project comprises 5,000 solar panels and generates 3.3 GWh of electricity per year, half of which is produced during the winter months.

The largest urban solar plant

The Oncopole Toulouse Solar PV Park is the largest urban solar plant ever built. Situated near the centre of Toulouse (France), it involved rehabilitating land previously contaminated by a fertiliser factory. It covers 25 hectares of solar surface and supplies electricity to 4,100 homes annually. Its design, featuring panels of different colours, creates a stunning visual effect, taking on various forms depending on the viewing angle.
