In 2019, Axpo Iberia became the first company certified to sell biomethane in Spain, a CO₂-neutral gas produced from livestock, agro-industrial and domestic waste, as well as sewage sludge.

Through biomethanisation, different microorganisms, in the absence of oxygen, transform organic matter into biogas, which, once purified, becomes biomethane. A 100% renewable resource with a similar composition and potential to natural gas, meaning it can be injected into the existing distribution grid. This makes it a great solution, not just for waste management but also for decarbonising the gas system.

Producing biomethane is an exciting business opportunity. Turning your waste and by-products into raw material for an energy source while helping you dispose of them and promoting the circular economy can bring you additional revenue and add value to your facilities, as it complements your main business activity.

That’s why many companies have already decided to embrace the energy transition by installing a biogas plant.

The Catalan family farm Torre Santamaría installed one of the first biogas plants (digesters) in 2011. It is capable of breaking down the manure from its cows and converting it into gas to meet its heating and hot water needs.

By 2020, as Axpo Iberia customers, Torre Santamaría became the first dairy farm in Spain to be entirely energy self-sufficient, as it was able to convert all its organic waste into 100% renewable biogas and electricity.

Thanks to this system, by early 2022, Torre Santamaría had reduced its greenhouse gas emissions to almost zero and started generating additional income by feeding surplus energy into the electricity grid and biomethane into the gas grid. In June 2023, Axpo Iberia and local partners acquired the plant, allowing for its expansion and capacity improvements.
