Sustainability We’re betting on the future

Our commitment to sustainability is undeniable: in Switzerland, no one produces more renewable energy than we do. Globally, we’re international leaders in solar and wind energy trading. And in Spain, we manage one of the largest portfolios of renewable energy producers.

Shaping tomorrow

Sustainability is all about meeting today’s needs without compromising those of future generations. That’s why Axpo is investing in innovative energy solutions.

As leaders in the energy sector, we are obligated and responsible for significantly contributing to the energy transition by aligning our business model with sustainability.

Our four-pronged approach:

At Axpo, sustainability is a long-standing tradition, and it’s something we practise daily. We set our goals with a forward-looking vision, focusing on four key pillars:

One of our top priorities is creating plants, parks, and facilities that generate electricity from solar and wind energy, produce green hydrogen and harness biomass energy.

We've always been active in the PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) market, signing long-term energy purchase agreements to contribute to constructing sustainable energy plants.

Our commitment to achieving net zero (zero greenhouse gas emissions) also strongly supports climate and environmental goals such as combating climate change, using resources sustainably, controlling pollution, and protecting and restoring biodiversity and ecosystems.

Energy Transition

We’re fully committed to transforming the current energy system by moving away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources. These are inexhaustible, produce fewer polluting emissions, and have a lower environmental impact.

We’re constantly expanding our renewable energy capacity (solar, wind, green hydrogen, hydroelectric, biomethane, biomass, etc.) and actively driving the development of environmentally friendly electricity production.

Decarbonisation

By producing and trading low-CO2 energy, we’re effectively contributing to the system's decarbonisation. Our tailored energy solutions also help our customers be more planet-friendly. Our goal is to reach net zero for all emissions under our direct control by 2040, and by 2050, we aim to decarbonise every last activity in our value chain.

We take social responsibility seriously and are committed to it. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) are at the heart of Axpo’s culture. We invest in our employees and support their well-being. We aim for them to grow personally and professionally, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Diversity and inclusion

Our team needs various experiences, skills, and backgrounds to remain innovative. That’s why we actively promote diversity within the company, ensuring all employees feel like part of the Axpo family.

We are clearly and explicitly committed to tolerance, inclusion, equal opportunities, and freedom of choice and expression within the boundaries of the law and our company’s policies and values. This means creating an environment where everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, or socio-economic, cultural, and religious background, feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best.

Employee development

We recognise that our employees play a crucial role in Axpo’s short- and long-term success, so we strive to offer them learning and development opportunities through training programmes and attractive working conditions tailored to their needs.

At Axpo, sharing knowledge and learning from each other is essential. We grow with every new challenge, inspire others, and foster innovative ideas. Together, we have an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience!

We fully know our corporate responsibility, and ethics guide us in everything we do. We base our business relationships on integrity and trust, promote and demand a strong culture of compliance, and seek partners who share our values.

Responsible supply chains

Given the complexity of global supply chains, we require our suppliers and business partners to operate in accordance with the law and Axpo’s Code of Conduct.

By signing this code, our suppliers and partners commit to ethical business practices, respect for human rights, compliance with environmental standards, and socially acceptable working conditions.

Ethical business conduct

As representatives of Axpo, all our employees and executives must ensure that their actions do not violate any laws, ethical principles, or internal regulations. Our commitment to conducting business with the highest level of integrity, ethics, and transparency is non-negotiable.

As drivers of the transition to zero-emission energy, we are investing in the technologies of tomorrow, such as green hydrogen and energy storage. We can only move towards a better future if growth and innovation go hand in hand with sustainability.

Sustainable financing

Our commitment to sustainability is absolute, and we demonstrate this through our financing efforts. Among other initiatives, we have issued several sustainability-linked bonds in the capital markets, which support the continued expansion of clean energy.

Green growth

Renewable energy solutions are essential to successfully navigating the energy transition. That’s why we actively support technological innovations in the sector and invest in specific areas of green growth. Here are some examples with Axpo’s signature:

  • Oncopole Toulouse Solar PV Park: the most extensive urban solar plant ever built, located on the former site of a contaminated fertiliser factory.

  • AlpinSolar: Switzerland’s largest alpine solar plant, installed at 2,500 metres above sea level to harness solar energy all year round.

  • Hydro Digital: we are digitising over fifty hydroelectric plants across Switzerland, many of which have been operating for over a century.
