Biomass When waste becomes the solution

For over ten years, Axpo Iberia has been managing, processing, and marketing various types of biomass. Our services cover all logistical aspects (land and sea) up to the boiler door. In addition to working with continental and island markets, we collaborate with the most significant biomass consumers and producers in Europe, supporting their activities through the group's different subsidiaries, which gives us a comprehensive global market perspective.

What is biomass?

Biomass is quite broad, but it mainly refers to waste from agricultural, forestry, and livestock activities, by-products from the agri-food and wood processing industries, and the organic fraction of household and industrial waste.

From biomass, we can obtain three types of fuels:

  • Solid biofuels

  • Biogas

  • Biofuels

The most common solid biofuels obtained from biomass are wood pellets and chips, though others are less abundant but just as important, like olive by-products, nut shells, and firewood.

Logistics

Axpo Iberia's Biomass Department manages biomass transportation across various markets, optimising routes and times to meet our clients' demands. Whether by sea or land (tanker trucks, walking floors, etc.), we apply the strictest controls throughout the logistics chain to ensure the quality of the biomass and the required weight at all times.

Management

As a large-scale biomass marketer, we focus on matching the product to the consumer's quantity, quality, and price demand while always adhering to the agreed schedule. We must always consider biomass's seasonality, availability, and energy and granulation characteristics to guarantee optimal supply.

To provide a homogeneous organic fuel capable of competing with fossil fuels in terms of reliability and comfort, Axpo carries out various value-added activities at our supply centres:

We dry the biomass to reduce its moisture, optimising the byproduct and increasing its calorific value.

We carry out a grinding process to homogenise the biomass input into the boilers, thus increasing its efficiency.

We screen the products to separate them by size and density, eliminating existing impurities.

We compact different products and raw materials to make them easier to handle and improve their performance.

We package different types of biomass to facilitate transportation and delivery to the end customer.

We offer national and international logistics services delivered by ship, truck, or container in bulk, big bags, and pneumatic formats.

The ENplus® quality certification system is based on the international standard ISO 17225-2, related to non-industrial wood pellets. With its A1 certification (pellets made from virgin wood and untreated wood residues with low ash, nitrogen, and chlorine content), Axpo guarantees the quality and traceability of the product.

Additionally, we maintain rigorous quality controls throughout the supply chain, conducted by internationally recognised and accredited laboratories.

Our strategy is to offer top-quality service to all our customers, regardless of the product's end use (electric, thermal, industrial, or residential). At Axpo, we combine diversification with a reliable supply of eco-friendly, renewable fuel, ensuring its quality meets the technical requirements of boilers and consumers' reception systems.
